Tackle and starting setup
Sliding rig: olive sinker, bead, swivel, leader; hook suited to the size of the live bait. Steel as soon as barracudas are about.
The rig step by step
- Set up the sliding rig as for bottom fishing
- Hook the live bait under the skin of the back behind the dorsal fin, or through both lips
- Cast gently, without tearing off the live bait
- Let the predator swallow for a few seconds before striking
Bait: Sardinella or bonga shad, caught at dawn with a dip net or fine line.
Setting and technique: Keep live baits in an aerated live well or a bucket with frequently changed water: a sluggish live bait is a dead bait.
